Treating Navicular Disease In Horses

By Olivia Cross

For the last few years, various interested veterinarians have created theories and treatment methods that involve our domesticated animals. Navicular disease in horses has been a major bother and has created a reasonable attention for a period. The veterinarians involved has resulted in giving this disease various sort of names, but the accepted vernacular name that is widely known is caudal heel pain. It is always a setback to see your close pet or domestic animal diagnosed with this type of disease.

During the treatment of caudal heel pain, the best remedy one can offer is shoeing and trimming. The main idea behind this is to lower the inner tension that arose mainly when the animal is in motion or moving leading to pressure being applied to its heel. Another option that may be used to reduce this tensions using a wedge. Many other ways relate to horseshoes that one can use to reduce the heel caudal pain, but this option must be selected wisely.

The next field to exploit is the application of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory medicines to regulate the level of foot discomfort. The accepted drug offered by most veterinarians is phenylbutazone, which is very efficient in small and medium illness. However, there some side effects associated with this drug such as gastric ulcers, but of late a drug referred to as firocoxib has been embraced since it works the same as phenylbutazone but with no side effect.

If these primary treatments do not work, the next best alternative is the application of corticosteroid, which is an injection drug. It is injected directly into the affected area. The primary objective of this drug is mainly to relieve inflammation in the foot. The steroid that has been injected mainly takes 10 to 14 days to heal fully.

There are other treatments designed for caudal heel pain such as the use of hyaluronic acid and extracorporeal shock wave treatment. Hyaluronic acid is a medication used for injection into the joint or also may be administered intravenously to reduce inflammation around the joint area.

Human medication such as the one used in treating osteopetrosis in human has also come a long way in treating caudal heel pain. This type of medication is now gaining acceptance also in treatment of navicular resorption also found in domesticated animals. The drug is administered through perfusion of the affected region. The principal aim of all these methods is actually to relieve pain on the injured foot.

The surgeon can also offer a solution to this animal affected by caudal heel pain using various methods. The primary method includes severing the nerves that are responsible for supplying sensation towards the rear of the foot also referred to as the neurectomy. This method does relieve the pain and complete healing within a period of 3 to 5 years.

Finally, we can openly conclude that these diseases are nowhere close to being terminal. Their main causes are closely connected to trauma and reduction blood shortage in the foot zone. Threatens should be always be done at clinical and radiographic symptom level.
