Benefits Colloidal Silver You Should Know

By Ida Dorsey

For many years, colloidal silver has been utilized for a lot of things. It is a liquid made up of tiny silver (greyish-white metal) particles held in a suspension and the benefits colloidal silver are several. The liquid has been advertised as everything ranging from a dietary supplement to an antibiotic. Its reputation hit the peak at the commencement of the previous century, and currently, in view of the progress achieved in modern medicine, the product has almost become obsolete.

The FDA and NCCAM (The National Center of Complementary and Alternative Medicine) do not consider it to be safe of effective in treating any disease or condition, and they have issued a warning against its use. In fact, both agencies have taken action against companies that have boasted its use in their product. In 1999, the FDA issued a ban on over the counter drugs that use the product or anything related to it.

In addition to being banned by the FDA, this greyish-white metal has serious side effects. The precious metal is not absorbed in to your body, it builds up. This build up can cause a serious side effect called argyria, which gives you a bluish or greyish colour of the skin, eyes, nails, and gums. It is permanent and exacerbated by sunlight. Other side effects include kidney, liver and nervous system failure. It can also interfere with the body's absorption of drugs, including antibiotics, certain thyroid medicines, and certain rheumatoid arthritis medications.

In spite all of these actions some companies are still marketing silver as their 'cure all'. This product is very fashionable among homeopaths. Its advocates are claiming that it is effectual against lots of diseases and many viruses and insist that it's not reactive with other drugs. In addition, they insist that it makes an effectual antibiotic, although scientific evidence is lacking to shore up this claim.

Today it's still being used like a dietary supplement besides being employed for treating bronchitis and emphysema. Other proponents of the greyish-white metal use it for treating some skin conditions, like rosacea, psoriasis and eczema. It is also claimed that it fights HIV and AIDs, plus a number of STDs too.

Just like with any item, there always two sides of the coin. Some are standing by it and are continuing to utilize this and other products made of silver while others are standing by the claims made by the NCCAM and FDA. While no scientific proof is available to recommend the greyish-white metal product, some people will vow by it as their 'cure all'.

It is correct, that during the 1920s and 1930s, this product was flaunted as the wonder cure for all plus that this legacy has pursued humans even today. It appears that the antagonistic sides - the product's proponents and FDA supporters are on opposite ends of the field. This is a huge gap and it's doubtful if this big gap will get closed ever.

People need to be aware of the FDA ban and the potential harmful side effects, but those who use colloidal silver will continue to use is, and those who are opposed to it will continue to be opposed. There is no definitive answer to closing this particular divide, but as long as it's being used as a supposed 'cure all', there will still be this divide.
